This project is inspired by the active female form. As a lifelong jock, and a woman born in the US 15 years after the passing of Title IX, I grew up surrounded by muscular women. There was a time when I felt embarrassed by my own musculature as a young heterosexual woman, thinking it wasn't feminine or attractive. I have memories of boys teasing me for being "buff" or "burly", pointing fingers at my "back pack" and "thunder thighs". As time passed, I started to gain pride in my muscles, realizing that I always appreciated other women's muscles and yet somehow didn't appreciate my own. My forearms, my biceps, my lats, my abs and my quads are all products of a lifetime of running, rock climbing, swimming, kayaking, soccer, hiking, and biking. Muscles are feminine, too.
As a photographer, I have always been drawn to black and white, to bodies viewed as textured landscapes, and to concrete, real things being depicted in an abstract way. This project is inspired by the works of Ruth Bernhard and Imogen Cunningham, two women of earlier generations who shot abstract nudes of the female form. I wanted to visually attempt something similar, but do it using the active and muscular female form of my generation. While Bernhard and Cunningham's photography often captures soft, subtle shapes--I want to capture the strong angles and less subtle shapes created by women in motion.
I'm looking for active and muscular women of all racial backgrounds who are comfortable posing naked. I am absolutely open to and seeking individuals who identify as gender-fluid, gender nonconforming and trans. While this project focuses on the active female, I want to as much as I am able, capture forms that represent a full spectrum of the experience of what it means to be or identify as female, partially or wholly.
This is a personal project and so is unpaid. I consider this project a creative collaboration, and want my muses to feel less like models and more like my co-artists. Email me at email@example.com if you are interested in participating, and please pass the info along to anyone you think may like to be a part of this project, which remains unnamed.
Thanks, and flex on, bitches.
